Dangerous Stunts Online

Dangerous stunts which have been filmed on a mobile phone, have appeared on popular video sharing website, YouTube. The videos show youths jumping from Bridges along the River Ancholme, and from overhead sewage pipes. The youths could easily be killed doing these stupid and immature stunts. A swimming pool is for swimming and diving in - not a dangerous river, with strong underwater currents. In the places where the youths have been jumping, there could easily be lots of underwater debris. Jumping off bridges could also result in serious injury when hitting the water below. To the right is some of the images we obtained of these youths jumping off bridges and overhead sewage pipes into the River Ancholme, Brigg. Some of the images are at Castlethorpe Bridge, some at Horkstow Bridge - and the rest in central Brigg. In the last edition of the “Ancholme Newsletter”, there was an article about these stunts - which generated lots of comments from the readers.

Below is a cutting from the Ancholme Newsletter, containing the article about these dangerous stunts. Please click the image to enlarge it.

Interesting piece. I have heard that many years ago boys used to jump off the Ancholme Oil Mills into the River Ancholme.

It was dangerous then as it is now: the riverbed is full of rubble, trollies, bikes, branches etc.

Your blog is looking really good and is raising some interesting issues. Keep up the good work.

I woulsdn't swim in the Ancolme near Brigg, but it is not neccessarily dangerous to swim in a river, parts of the Ancholme, near Brandy Wharf for example are suitable for swimming. People have been doing so, in safety, for many years

The most dangerous prank played by youths on the River Ancholme is the throwing of projectiles from the various bridges at passing boats between South Ferriby and Brigg.
Having experienced this on numerous occasions last summer it appears to be a very active sport for a minority of yobs.
The police have been informed as to what is happening and hopefully this coming summer will see this dangerous practice end with a greater police presence on the banks of the Ancholme
